Education Mode

St John’s TRC always upholds the aim to have inclusive education to all children so that we concentrate on child centred education system as per the new curriculum called EPICC (Evaluation Programme for Intellectually Challenge Children )for special children which established by the SCERT from the commission of Dr. M K Jayaraj. We have primary, pre Primary, Secondary, Vocational and Pre Vocational class divisions. After admissions, we divide the new comers to classes through an assessment lasting for three months by the Psychologist. Psychologist will examine the level of IQ, Child’s capacity and age. Each three months’ a follow up checkups are compulsory consequently set up both short term and Long term goals.

The education is thoroughly going through social, technological and practical aspects. For Example, to teach a group of children about trees and fruits, teacher take them to outside the class and show them trees and fruits practically. So that the student could grasp the lesson and keep in mind forever. Through such experiments children grow gradually to an extent.

Now the total strength of the school is 78 along with more than 20 of teaching and non teaching staffs with high professional degrees in special school sector. We have many children with different kinds of disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down syndrome and Mental Retardation. Each disability has mild, moderate and severe categories. They all have secured a valid medical certificate. But the problem we confront is that the government has not yet declared Aided appellation. St John’s TRC has a management committee headed by Provincial manger Rev. Sr. Lismaria MSJ and Dharmagiri Vikas Society as well.

Structure of the school

All our buildings are disabled friendly for children’s easy access to bathroom, assembly hall, class room, and dining hall. Computer lab and library are set up for enhancing their reading capacity and computer skill. Play ground is attached with sensory park with basic rides. As we mentioned the building before was in a hospital model, so that majority of the office structure and equipments are likely to hospital based. The surroundings are neat and clean with hygienic. Though we have many rooms available, we are facing many difficulties for set up classrooms in required measures by the government. All our rooms, pavements and school surroundings are highly secured to prevent even a tiny accident to our children. We set up the classes in the first floor and occupational therapy, speech therapy and IEP room is on the ground floor.

Therapies: We have basic therapies such as Physio therapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy which are required in a special school

Physiotherapy Unit

A well equipped physiotherapy unit is built in the special school which caters the need of most of the students with profound and multiple disabilities as well as learning disabilities. This serves as an innovative educational approach which maximizes the potential of children especially those with cerebral palsy and those who are physically challenged. Our physiotherapy unit is aimed at helping the children to develop and maintain their mobility skills, joint range of movement, muscle strength, and motor skills. The physiotherapists also give advice on activities to help to improve their access to the curriculum.

Speech Therapy Unit

Speech therapy unit began its services with the start of the school. The speech and language therapists specialize in a variety of methods to address the communication needs of students exhibiting various disorders and/or symptoms including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, developmental disorders and other rare disorders. The speech and language therapists are dedicated to teaching students a way to functionally and socially communicate with others within the school and outside of it addressing their receptive language, auditory processing, expressive language, pragmatic language and social communication, keeping in mind the individual strength and weakness of the students.

Occupational Training

An experienced therapist as well as a well equipped occupational therapy unit is inbuilt within the school. Occupational therapy is provided in our school in order to help children who struggle with a variety of daily activities, including
